As of July, Nancy Garner has been certified as an Indiana Certified Recovery Specialist, with a mental Health speciality-which allows her to assist peers that share a mental health diagnosis, assisting them with self-determined goals in their recovery. In April, she passed the grandfathering and is now a Community Health Worker and CRS. In 2016, Nancy passed the Kentucky Adult Peer Support Specialist training exam and is now employed in Kentucky.
Earlier in her life she received a BA in Social Service with a major in Psychology from IUS (2004), and an Associate degree in Paralegal Studies from U of L (2007).
Nancy has resided in Indiana since 1988, but was born and raised in Pennsylvania where her family remains today.
Writing a grant to the Division of Mental Health and Addiction proved to be the start of her dreams and walking with peers. We heard in April 2014 that we have been selected for another grant on support of our consumer operated business and the pilot study to develops Pathways to HOPE program. This is to begin July 1st, 2014.
Nancy's life journey has taken her through Behavioral Health diagnosis and through Counseling, Dialectic Behavior Therapy, support groups including NAMI and SOAR(Survivors of Abuse Restored), membership and involvementin church, Prayer and her personal relationship with Christ, Nancy is traveling into recovery from the mental illness to her life mission. There are still difficult days due to the mental health issues and she maintans recovery through counseling, support groups, Bible Study groups, and pastoral counselors and Spiritual advisors.
As such, her chief desire is to use her life experiences to reach out and minister to others especially in the Mental Health Field walking beside her peers the walk she has walked and is walking in maintaining her own wellness and recovery and to educate the community on mental illness.
